New to Medicare?

Your Eligibility

To be eligible for Medicare, individuals must generally meet one of the following criteria:

  • Age 65 or Older: Most people qualify for Medicare once they turn 65, regardless of income or medical history.

  • Under 65 with Disabilities: Those who have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months are eligible for Medicare.

  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS: Individuals with ESRD or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) can qualify for Medicare at any age.

Parts of Medicare

Medicare is divided into four key parts, each covering different aspects of healthcare:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and limited home health care. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and some home health care. It requires a monthly premium.

  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offers an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) through private insurance companies. These plans often include additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage.

  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs, offered through private insurance companies. It requires a separate premium unless included in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Enrollment

Medicare enrollment is an important step to ensure healthcare coverage, and there are specific periods when individuals are eligible to sign up:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is a 7-month window that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birth month, and extends 3 months after. During this period, you can sign up for Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D.

  • General Enrollment Period (GEP): If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period, you can enroll between January 1 and March 31 each year. Coverage starts on July 1, but a late enrollment penalty may apply.

  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): You can enroll outside the standard periods if you qualify due to specific life events, such as losing employer coverage or moving out of your Medicare plan’s service area.

  • Open Enrollment Period (OEP): Between October 15 and December 7 each year, you can make changes to your Medicare plan, such as switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan or changing Part D prescription drug plans.
